Ind Vs WI: Rohit Guides India To 3-Wkt Win As Visitors Clinch Series

Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 86 as India beat West Indies by three wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series here on Saturday. Score | Photos

Chasing a target of 226, the visitors were reeling at 92/6 but Rohit (86 not out, 91 balls, 5x4, 2x6) along with Harbhajan Singh (41, 64 balls, 1x6, 1x4) added 88 runs as India finally got home rather comfortably with 22 balls to spare.

The last two matches of the series will thus be rendered inconsequential as Rohit kept his composure when the team was in dire straits. He got an able ally in Harbhajan as the two batted with utmost responsibility. They never did anything flashy during their seventh wicket stand that lasted 18.4 overs.

Save Parthiv Patel (46, 56 balls, 4x4, 1x6), none of the top-order batsmen showed intent although Virat Kohli got a poor leg-before decision when the ball seemed to be travelling down leg-side.

Shikhar Dhawan (4) struggled, Subramanium Badrinath (11) went for a non-existent single, Suresh Raina was out to an ugly heave. When Yusuf Pathan was brilliantly caught by Lendl Simmons to reduce India to 92 for six, it looked like all but over for the Men In Blue.

But Rohit had other ideas. Along with Harbhajan, he ran the singles well but didn't forget to punish the loose deliveries in the process. Praveen Kumar (25 no, 14 balls) provided final flourish after Harbhajan was dismissed.

It was a tale of batting collapses and late recoveries with for both teams. When West Indies batted, they were tottering at 96 for 7 in the 30th over before recovering to reach 225 for 8 in their 50 overs, thanks Andre Russell's magnificent 64 -ball unbeaten 92 (8x4, 5x6).

West Indies lost six wickets at one stage for 31 runs while India also lost four wickets for 32 runs in the middle overs before making a good comeback.

Interestingly, a run-out at critical junctures in both innings had a huge role in the context of the batting collapse for the teams.

West Indies were 65 for 1 in the 15th over when Ramnaresh Sarwan was run-out and the mini collapse occurred. India was seemingly cruising at 60 for 2 in the 16th over when Badrinath rather foolishly ran himself out which triggered a collapse.

Badrinath drove to mid-off rather firmly and set off for a single and realised late that his partner Parthiv had not responded. He tried to trace back his steps but it was too late-even a despairing dive wasn't of any use.

It affected the concentration of Parthiv (46) who cut at a widish delivery from Devendra Bishoo straight into the hands of Russell stationed at gully.

During India's bowling, leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3 for 28) had once again befuddled the hosts but the bowlers couldn't polish off the tail as it resulted in West Indies crossing 200 from being down in the dumps at 96 for seven.

Largely it was on account of an unexpected hurricane from fast bowler Andre Russell who clobbered the bowlers with utter disdain.

Russell shared two important stands of 78 and 47 runs for eighth and ninth wicket with wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh (36) and Kemar Roach (7 not out) to lead the recovery as 47 runs came off the final three overs.

Russell was helped by India's late introduction of their fifth bowler. The part-timers Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli gave away as many 65 runs from their quota of 10 overs.

Russell plundered 42 runs from the final 14 deliveries he faced and smashed 22 and 15 runs off the final two overs bowled by Suresh Raina and Praveen Kumar respectively.

He put a lid on the home innings in style by smashing Praveen for a six and a four off the final two deliveries of the innings.

Earlier, it was Sarwan's dismissal shell-shocked the hosts and galvanized the tourists to the extent that the entire innings came off the wheels in the next few overs.

Mishra built on this breakthrough with three wickets off successive overs.

He first had Marlon Samuels (1) feel for a delivery outside his off stump to be out stumped and then sent down a googly which Danza Hyatt (1) mistook for a leg-break and was bowled off an inside edge.

Top-scorer Simmons (45) then went forward in defence, only to find the big-turning leg break take the edge to first slip.

It brought Kieron Pollard to the crease in the 25th over and demanded some responsible batting. Pollard scratched around for 16 deliveries to score 6 runs before he was caught behind off Harbhajan Singh's bowling.

He gave full vent to his displeasure at the decision and took ages to get off the ground.

Munaf Patel came back for his second spell with the wicket of skipper Sammy in the 30th over as he made him edge one behind the stumps. West Indies were certainly down and out at 96 for 7.

However Baugh and Russell made a meal out of India's fifth bowler Yusuf Pathan who was hit for two successive sixes in the 40th over by the latter over midwicket.

Munaf finally broke the stand in the 46th over when Baugh lifted one into the covers for Shikhar Dhawan to take a simple catch.

Russell went on to complete his half century in the 47th over with a single off Raina.

Ind Vs WI: India Plays For Clean Sweep, Windies For Pride

An unbeatable 3-0 lead in hand, India would now aim for a cleansweep while trying out new players when they take on a demoralised West Indies in the inconsequential fourth game of their five-match one-day international series, on Monday.

Led by Suresh Raina, the second-string Indian team has given a good account of itself dominating the struggling Caribbean side, which has been weakened further by the absence of big-hitting Chris Gayle and reliable performers such as Dwayne Bravo.

In fact, the series has done a world of good to young Indian players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Raina himself.

They have proved themselves as fighters when faced with tense situations, prompting coach Duncan Fletcher to state that the given the pool of talent, his wards are set to dominate world cricket for another decade or so.

"It is due to the amount of talent India have. Indian cricket is in a very, very healthy state presently," stated Fletcher after India clinched the series with a three-wicket win yesterday.

Right-handed batsman Manoj Tiwary might get a look in after Raina hinted that reserve players are likely to be fielded for the remaining two matches. But bowling would certainly be an area of concern for the Indians.

Without the ever-reliable Zaheer Khan, who won't be available even for the Test series due to injury, the pacers led by Munaf Patel have struggled as was evident from the way West Indian number nine Andre Russell took them to the cleaners on Saturday.

AITUC Backs Strike At Maruti Plant In Manesar

The strike at the Manesar plant of India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki is spilling over. Backed by the All-India Trade Union Congress, over 50,000 workers in the Manesar-Gurgaon industrial belt - India's biggest auto hub - will observe a two-hour tool-down strike on Tuesday in support of the agitating employees of Maruti Suzuki.

The development follows a stalemate in the talks on the issue of reinstating sacked employees of Maruti.

Worker unions from Hero Honda's Daruhera plant, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, Rico Auto, Endurance Auto and Satyam Auto will join the two-hour tool-down strike.

The backing of the left wing All-India Trade Union Congress to the workers could mean more pressure on the Maruti Suzuki management.

The Manesar-Gurgaon auto belt produces about 50 per cent of the cars and two-wheelers in the country.

Officials of Maruti, workers and the state government had met on Sunday to discuss contentious issues. There are signs of a resolution to the strike that has entered its tenth day on Monday. Maruti Suzuki says it is willing to recognise the new union - the main demand of the workers. But the company is still silent on the issue of sacked workers.

Maruti Suzuki has three plants in Gurgaon and one in Manesar. Two more plants are coming up in Manesar besides a new plant in Gujarat.

The impact

Two thousand workers at the Manesar plant have been on strike since the June 4. The workers are demanding the recognition of a union they want to form. They also want the company to reinstate all eleven employees, who have been sacked during the strike.

Maruti Suzuki has suffered a production loss of almost 8,000 cars. In monetary terms, that has cost the company about Rs 400 crore or Rs 40 crore daily.

The factory produces hatchbacks Swift and A-Star and sedans DZiRE and SX4. The strike will also mean that the waiting period for the DZire sedan will get longer.

Mark Zuckerberg's Girlfriend His Fiancee: Bill Gates

Microsoft founder Bill Gates may have let the cat out of the bag when it comes to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's marital status. In an interview to an international daily, Gates used the word "fiancee" for Zuckerberg's long-time girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

Gates is close to Zuckerberg, 26, who has pledged to give most of his fortune away and this inadvertent slip may hint that Zuckerberg is already taken.

Discussing their combined philanthropy, Gates said: "I didn't say to Mark 'Give me all your money!' He was predisposed to do it and he came to me seeking advice. His fiancee Priscilla thought about education and he gave money to Newark, New Jersey, and we did a co-grant so that some of our people who had some expertise in that field could help him out."

The very-possible slip of the tongue, saying fiancee instead of girlfriend, does add up. Zuckerberg has been dating Chan since 2003. He recently hit the headlines after buying a 5,000 square feet palace in California for $7 million, moving in with Chan soon after.

However, their Facebook profiles reveal a different story. In March, both Zuckerberg and Chan said they were in a relationship with each other. They had already been dating for seven years.

Then, on June 12 - the day the interview was published - Chan's page still showed she was in a relationship with Zuckerberg, while his didn't have any reference to their relationship. It is not clear when the change was made, or why. Zuckerberg and Chan started seeing each other when they were both studying at Harvard University.

Zuckerberg, who is the 52nd richest in the world with his worth at $13.5 billion, is the second-youngest billionaire in the world, according to Forbes magazine. The first spot rests with Facebook co-founder and billionaire Dustin Moskovitz.

Why An Honest PM Scared Of Being Probed By Lokpal, Asks Hazare Team

Civil society led by Anna Hazare on Monday hit back at the government over the charge that it was undermining Parliament and Constitution and asked why an "honest" man like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is "scared" of being investigated by the Lokpal.

Two days ahead of the next meeting of the joint drafting committee on Lokpal Bill, civil society members shot off a letter to Singh alleging that the government appeared to be shrinking the scope of the anti-corruption regime and non-inclusion of the Prime Minister under the ambit of the Lokpal would be a "retrograde" step.

Raising their pitch on the issue, the activists also took on Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for accusing the civil society of trying to undermine democracy and said his statement betrayed a "distorted understanding of democracy and arrogance of power".
"You are one of the most honest Prime Ministers the country has had. It is ironical that your own government should seek to take the Prime Minister out of the purview of Lokpal's investigations.

"We are wondering what happened post March 2011, which prompted the government to suddenly take a U-turn on this issue. Till now the Prime Minister could be investigated by the CBI. Why an honest Prime Minister like you should be scared of being investigated by an independent Lokpal," the activists said in the three-page letter to Singh.

Activist Arvind Kejriwal termed the government insistence on non-inclusion of the Prime Minister under the purview of Lokpal as "completely mysterious" when governments for the past ten years were of the view that this post should come under the ombudsman.

In the letter, the activists said, in order to take the Prime Minister out of the purview of the ombudsman, the government will need to amend the Constitution and grant him immunity similar to that enjoyed by the President. They asked if the government is planning to do that and why.

"Taking the Prime Minister out of the ambit of the Lokpal would be a retrograde step," the letter said.

"We remember in the past you had yourself offered to be brought under the purview of Lokpal Bill. Then why are your own ministers opposing your inclusion in Lokpal's ambit? Is there a disconnect or communication gap within the government?" the letter said.

Interestingly, it said, three out of five ministers in the joint committee, have themselves advocated inclusion of the Prime Minister in Lokpal Bill on earlier occasions.

The letter also mentioned that Mukherjee, as chairman of the Standing Committee in 2001, had himself recommended that Prime Minister should be covered under Lokpal and then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had agreed to that.

It also said that Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, also a member of the Lokpal Bill, suggested inclusion of the Prime Minister in the legislation and Home Minister P Chidambaram had concurred with him.

"Now all the three ministers have suddenly taken a U-turn and they appear to be adamant on keeping the PMO out of Lokpal's ambit. We want to know what happened so that the PMO does not want any disclosure of its conduct," Kejriwal said.

Arguing for the inclusion of the Prime Minister under the Lokpal, the letter said the post is covered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and any allegation of corruption against a Prime Minister can be investigated. No exception has been made for the Prime Minister, they said.

The letter said the CBI does the investigations on allegations against the Prime Minister but the agency is under his control. They said the only change they were proposing was that rather than being investigated by an agency under his control, let the Prime Minister be investigated by an independent agency.

The letter also sought to know from Singh about the government stand that a Prime Minister under the scanner would become dysfunctional.

Noting that he had worked with former prime ministers Rajiv Gandhi and P V Narasimha Rao, they asked whether he felt that Gandhi became "dysfunctional" due to Bofors probe or Rao owing to the investigations into JMM MPs payoff case.

They also noted that the Prime Minister was privy to sensitive security secrets and said, "Suppose tomorrow, a corrupt person like Madhu Koda or A Raja or Reddy brothers became Prime Minister.

"Don't you feel that the security of the country itself would be seriously compromised if Prime Minister enjoyed complete immunity from any investigations and trials?" the letter said.

Taking on Mukherjee for his comments against the civil society that it will become a circus if the committee proceedings are televised, Prashant Bhushan asked whether by saying this, the Finance Minister was hinting that Parliament proceedings were a circus.

"The government says that they can't make the proceedings public or have a live telecast of the joint committee meetings as it will become a circus. There is live telecast of Parliament proceedings. Does the Prime Minister and government think it is a circus in Parliament?" he said.

Asked why they were not pulling out of the drafting committee as there was so much of mistrust, Kejriwal said they have to work with this. "At least, we can put on record our dissent note," he said.
