Schwarzenegger Inaugurates His Museum In Austria

THAL: Arnold Schwarzenegger - the bodybuilder, movie star and ex-governor who's in the middle of a messy divorce - invoked his life as model for young people on Friday during the formal inauguration of a museum dedicated to him in his native Austria.

Hundreds of fans braved driving rain and chilly autumn temperatures to fete Austria's most famous living son at the museum, located in the two-story Thal village house where Schwarzenegger was born.

The museum, open since July, is a repository of items that include his first barbell, the metal bed that he slept on as a youth, several life-size "Terminator" models and the polished dark wooden desk he sat behind while California's governor.

Schwarzenegger also unveiled a bronze statue of himself flexing and in trunks as the young body builder from Austria whose rippling biceps led to his Hollywood career - and the popularity that paved the road to the governor's office.

Shielded by an umbrella, Schwarzenegger used the occasion to deliver an inspirational speech to youthful fans. Invoking the title of one of his early films, he told them anything was possible as long as they "stay hungry."

He said he wishes that every person who visits the museum "understands that everyone can be successful in his own way."

"My personal success has less to do with millions of dollars or with the headlines in the media that are not always positive and also not with being clapped on the shoulder by Barack Obama and other world names," he said. "Personal success is the result of determination, hard work and stubbornness.

"For me, this is not only a museum," he added, gesturing to the yellow-stuccoed house behind him. "It is also a symbol of will ... everyone has a chance."

The bronze statue is one of several commissioned by Schwarzenegger earlier this year. But even if some in the crowd knew that the Schwarzenegger likeness was not unique, they didn't seem to care. Bodyguards had to pry a path through people holding an umbrella in one hand and trying to touch their idol with the other, whistling and cheering as he passed by.

With Schwarzenegger was Patrick, his son from his marriage with Maria Shriver. The two are divorcing. But the museum displays photos of Schwarzenegger and Shriver in happier times, and Schwarzenegger described "the marriage with Maria" as one of the days "that I remember with great fondness."

The marriage unraveled after Schwarzenegger acknowledged being the father of child outside of his marriage - something that at least some fans gathered on Friday suggested tarnished his reputation.

"We Austrians are proud of him and what he accomplished," said Gottfried Karner, from the Upper Austrian city of Steyr. "But there are certain things he did that one does not agree with."

Most Austrians have stayed focused on Schwarzenegger's successes since he left for the United States in 1968, first as Mr. Universe, then as "Conan the Barbarian" and the "Terminator" - and finally his 2003 election as governor.

Even before his private life came up for criticism, however, Schwarzenegger's cult status in Austria took some knocks because of his support of the Iraq war and the death penalty as California's governor.

Criticism grew after he refused to pardon two convicted murderers in a row in 2005 to the point where he ordered city fathers in Graz - Austria's second largest city where he spent his youth - to strip his name from the Graz soccer stadium and sent back the city's highest award - its ring of honor.

Since then, the mood has swung back to adulation - and Friday's speeches reflected that. Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who opened the ceremonies, described Schwarzenegger as "one Austrian known by everyone in the world, adding: "We as Austrians are proud of you."

China Says Negligence Caused Shanghai Subway Crash

BEIJING: Shanghai safety authorities say a subway train crash last week was caused by negligence, and that three train operators have been removed from their posts.

The Shanghai administration of work safety said nine other subway train managers and workers were also punished after one train crashed into a stationary train on September 27, injuring around 290 passengers.

The administration said in a report Thursday a loss of power on the subway line caused the signal system to fail. It says dispatchers issued a number of wrong orders that led to the crash.

The subway crash was a shock for Shanghai, a city of 23 million that had its entire transport infrastructure - roads, airports, ports, tunnels and subways - upgraded ahead of the city's 2010 World Expo.

New Zealand City Hit By Another Quake, No Reports Of Damage

WELLINGTON: The earthquake-rattled city of Christchurch has been shaken by another powerful temblor.

The magnitude 4.7 quake struck just after 8:30 pm on Sunday and there were no initial reports of significant damage or injuries.

The country's Prime Minister John Key was in Christchurch watching a televised All Blacks rugby match with other fans at the time. The game was being played in Auckland.

Christchurch has been struck repeatedly by earthquakes over the past 13 months, including a devastating magnitude 6.1 quake that struck Feb 22 and killed 181 people, and destroyed much of the city's downtown.

Sunday's quake was the largest since June.

California Allows College Aid To Illegal Immigrants

LOS ANGELES: California governor Jerry Brown signed the California Dream Act into law, making illegal immigrants eligible for state money to attend American universities and colleges, his office said.

Under the act, illegal immigrants who have attended high school in the Golden State can receive Cal-Grant aid, which last year gave grants to more than 370,000 poor students of an average USD 4,500 each.

"Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking. The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us," Brown said.

California officials estimate that around 2,500 students will qualify for the grants under the new state legislation, called AB 131, costing USD 14.5 million, Brown's office said in a statement.

The overall Cal Grant programme is funded at USD 1.4 billion, meaning that only 1 percent of all the program's money will be potentially impacted by AB 131 when the law goes into effect, it said.

Brown, a veteran Democrat, took office in January, succeeding Republican actor turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had vetoed the legislation.

The passage of the law in liberal California, which has a massive immigrant population, could be seen as a signal to lawmakers in Washington, over the controversial Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.

The federal DREAM Act would give a six-year resident's permit to high school graduates who came to America illegally, and let them pay the much cheaper residents' tuition rates or obtain a scholarship to attend a US university.

It would affect 55,000 immigrant children brought to the United States illegally by their parents who have been through the public school system only to find college off-limits because of their legal status and high tuition fees.

Backers of the DREAM Act say the United States should encourage youths to pursue higher education as a key to their own and the nation's economic success.

But opponents say it would send a message to migrants that it was acceptable to come to the United States illegally, and should not be passed without a thorough reform of American immigration rules.

Pakistan To Repatriate Osama Family

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has contacted governments of Saudi Arabia and Yemen for the repatriation of slain al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden's three wives and their children, according to media reports.

The development came after a judicial commission probing the al-Qaida chief 's presence in Pakistan announced on Thursday that it had withdrawn its order barring bin Laden's family from leaving the country.

Authorities had contacted Saudi Arabia and Yemen to arrange for the repatriation of bin Laden's widows and children, unnamed Pakistani officials were quoted as saying by CBS News and CNN.

Bin Laden's family has been in the custody of Pakistani security agencies since he was killed. "We have now completed our investigations and pieced together all that we wanted to know from the family members," a senior Pakistani intelligence official said.

Us Church Gets Its First Gay Minister

SUN PRAIRIE: More than two decades after Scott Anderson told his California congregation that he was gay and therefore must resign as its pastor, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is preparing to welcome him back.

Anderson will be ordained on Saturday as the denomination's first openly gay minister.

The 56-year-old Anderson recalled keeping his personal life a secret from 1983 to 1990. He told his congregation the truth and resigned after a couple learned he was gay and tried to use it against him.

"It was the best because I was able to claim for the first time who I was as a gay man. That was incredibly empowering. But there was also the sadness, the grief of leaving the ministry and what I loved," he said.

Uk Defence Secretary Under Fire Over Aide

LONDON: British defence secretary Liam Fox is under considerable pressure following revelations that his flatmate and best man used his office and accompanied him to a visit to Sri Lanka without holding an official position.

Critics allege that national security may have been compromised.

Prime Minister David Cameron has called for details about the row and is expected to make a statement on Monday.

On his part, Fox has also initiated a ministry of defence (MoD) inquiry against himself.

His aide, Adam Werritty, 34, accompanied him to meetings with Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa and also on a visit to Sri Lanka.

The evidence in the form of photographs, emails and video escalated after Fox had previously stated in a parliamentary answer: "Mr Werritty is not an employee of the MoD and has, therefore, not travelled with me on any official visit".

The MoD investigation is looking into whether Fox broke the ministerial code over his working relationship with Werritty, who was the best man at Fox's wedding in 2005.

Fox is accused of giving Werritty access to the MoD and allowing him to go on official foreign trips.

Werritty also distributed visiting cards describing him as an adviser to Fox even though he was not appointed to that of any official post.

Japan Starts Thyroid Tests For Fukushima Children

TOKYO: Japan's Fukushima prefecture on Sunday began health check-ups of 360,000 children amid worries that radiation from a crippled nuclear plant had exposed them to the risk of thyroid abnormalities.

Many parents demanded the tests, drawing parallels with the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, after which locals reported thyroid disorders, a problem sometimes associated with radiation exposure.

The screenings began after a recent unofficial survey reported that 10 out of 130 children evacuated from Fukushima had hormonal and other irregularities in the thyroid glands.

The doctors who conducted the survey, however, added that they could not establish a link between the irregularities and the nuclear accident.

Officials said they will test some 360,000 children under the age of 18, and will provide follow up tests during their lifetimes.

The March 11 earthquake triggered a tsunami that tore into Japan's northeast coast, leaving 20,000 people dead or missing, while sparking meltdowns and explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

It was the world's worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster.

Radiation fears are a daily fact of life with reported cases of contaminated water, beef, vegetables, tea and seafood due to the Fukushima crisis.

Fast Bowling Doesn't Come Naturally To Us: Zaheer Khan

BANGALORE: When birthday boy Zaheer Khan walked into the hotel lobby on Friday after taking his initial steps towards rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy, he immediately set the hearts of a few pretty faces aflutter.

India, too, are hoping their injured pace spearhead will send shivers down the spines of opposition batsmen sooner than later. The 33-year-old spoke to TOI on a range of issues.

Excerpts:

What does it take to be a fast bowler in India?

It's not a natural thing. Indian bodies are not designed to bowl fast but that said, it's not very different from bowling outside India. Basically you have to spend a lot of time understanding yourself, your art, and then find out what works for you and what doesn't. It also involves a lot of hard work.

How hard is it to lead an Indian attack?

I enjoy playing at the highest level. That's my biggest motivation. The additional responsibility that I have only makes me more motivated to think not just about my game only but also the other bowlers. I like to give them the right advice, talk about what works at the highest level, how you can plan to get batsmen out. There are various components to this which I share with my colleagues.

What do you think of the fast bowling talent in India?

We've got plenty of talent coming. We've produced good bowlers in the past and I see a lot of youngsters coming, which is promising. You see someone like Ishant (Sharma), who came in so early, and he's now taking responsibility, that's great.

Why do Indian bowlers come into the side bowling close to 140kph, and then end up closer to 130kph?

I don't think it's the pressure of international cricket. It's about trying to adapt to the international level, where the room for error is less. You can't always do at the international level what you do at domestic level. You need to understand your bowling style and work on fitness that much more. The bottom line is as long you are able to produce results, it is fine. I also dropped pace, so basically it's important to know what works for you at the international level and put that into practice.

Do you agree that there is too much chopping and changing by the selectors, especially when it comes to pacers?

Not really, it's all part of the game. Injuries have also played a crucial part. Again, you see a lot of bowlers are coming up. It's about who grabs the opportunity.

County cricket helped you. Would you recommend it to fellow quicks?

The bottom line is match practice. Experience is something which is valued and you gain that by playing matches. No matter how hard you try at the nets, the match scenario is completely different. As for county cricket, their season is the off season in India, that's why I would recommend it, but again the bottom line is more matches, wherever you play.

Injuries to hamstring, groin, ankle and shoulder - how do you cope?

Not really. Injuries are part and parcel of fast bowling. One just has to deal with it, control the controllables and be patient. The key is to make sure you come back stronger every time.

How's the treatment coming along and when do you expect to take the field again?

It's been good. I had an ankle surgery and all I can say at this point is that things are looking good. Progress has been slow but I'm not putting too much pressure on myself. I'm also not putting a timeline to my return. I did bowl from two steps today, and it felt really good.

How frustrating was it to get injured in the first Test in England?

It happens. I wanted to play badly but what can one do. I was 100% fit when I landed in England and didn't rush my return in any way but picked up another injury. That's the way the game goes.

Anna Hazare Is Bjp's Choice For President's Post: Digvijay

AGRA: Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh says Anna Hazare is a mask of all anti-Congress parties and BJP intends to put up the social activist as its presidential candidate.

"The BJP intends to put up Hazare as the presidential candidate of all anti-Congress parties," the Congress general secretary told reporters here on Saturday evening.

Hazare is appealing to voters to defeat Congress in the Hisar Lok Sabha bypoll despite knowing fully the credentials of candidates of other parties, he said.

"Anna Hazare is a mask of all anti-Congress parties," said the Congress leader who was here to attend a national convention of the All-India Kshtriya Federation.

Digvijay said instead of launching an agitation against chief minister Mayawati and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for amassing wealth disproprortionate to their known sources of income, Hazare had planned a three-day fast for defeating the Congress in next year's Uttar Pradesh assembly election.

He said "Team Anna members are all anti-Congress in the their thinking."
